GM to Reintroduce Three-Cylinder Engines to the American Market

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer | Portland, ME

Engineers are better than ever at designing engines that deliver impressive power and efficiency in increasingly smaller packages. The latest proof of this is the news that General Motors is adding two new three-cylinder engines to its American lineup for the first time in 20 years.

The last time a GM vehicle came with a three-cylinder engine was the 2000 Chevrolet Metro. This 1.0-liter engine was only rated at 55 horsepower. The two modern engines will come in 1.2- and 1.3-liter variants, and will be available on the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Unlike the older three-cylinder engine, these engines will come with turbocharged technology and features like an electronically driven water pump, an electrically assisted wastegate system, and an active vacuum system. With all of that technology, these engines are expected to have an output in the neighborhood of 150 horsepower.

Not only is this much better than the previous versions of these engines, but it is on par with larger, less efficient four-cylinder engines, making the new three-cylinder models at least as strong, more cost-effective, and more environmentally-friendly than the larger engines they will replace.

The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is set to arrive here at Quirk Chevrolet of Portland sometime this spring. We can’t wait to see you here to celebrate comeback two decades in the making, and take the promising reinvention of the Trailblazer for a long-overdue test drive.
